Player Spotlight: Andrew Frisina

This year, junior Andrew Frisina has stepped up to fill an essential role on the Pioneer Offense. Playing his first two years on offense and being an impact player on Special Teams, Frisina has come to be known around the conference for his ability to catch the football. He is second on the team in receptions, with 40 on the year. He has caught the ball for over 570 yards, and averages over 70 yards receiving a game. Frisina has caught 4 Welch passes for TD's this year. Occasionally Frisina can be seen running the football and even on occasion throwing the ball-which he has 100% completion percentage.

Not only is Andrew a threat on the football field, despite his seemingly short stature, he is a menace on the baseball diamond. He's started 22 of 28 games with a slugging percentage of .367 last year with 2 HR and 9 RBIs, also being Hit by Pitches a staggering 5 times.

Frisina is one of many California natives on the team, hailing from San Pedro H.S. and a graduate of Rolling Hills Prep, where his father is the head coach and where is brother/teammate Torey Frisina is also a grad. Torey, Andrew's older brother, transferred into LC after his experience at the University of Redlands, and now plays defensive back for the Pios.

Top 10 Ranking in the West & upcoming Senior Game

This week Lewis and Clark College Football was ranked the #10 team in the West. They also received votes nominating them for the Top 25 rankings in the nation. The Pios have yet to crack into the national rankings list, but the presence of votes proves that the Pios are turning heads around the country. And the top 10 ranking in the west shows that those close by realize that the Pioneers are a force to be reckoned with. At 7-0 the Pioneers head into their last home game of the season vs. Willamette in the battle for the Wagon Wheel. 2000 was the most recent year the Pios took the Wagon Wheel home. The wheel has been the symbol of the rivalry since 1949.

Lewis and Clark beats Pacific Lutheran 34-32

The Lewis and Clark Pioneers remain undefeated after a 34-32 nail-biting victory over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes today. The team turned it on in the second half, scoring 27 pts and holding PLU to just 12. After a blindingly quick first 2 scores, PLU was up 14-0 and the Pioneers looked to be caught off guard by the Lutes. The Pios trailed 20-7 at the half. LC scored on the first drive of the 2nd half, which was followed by a PLU score. After a turnover was committed by either team, Lewis and Clark took the lead 27-26 early in the 4th quarter, and for the first time in the game. PLU turned the ball over on downs after trying a fake punt on 4th and 18, which was followed by a Lewis and Clark touchdown. LC led 34-26 when the Lutes scored to bring themselves within a chance to tie. Withe the score 34-32 PLU attempted a 2 point conversion which was a pass from Zack Halverson- it failed.Senior Chris Kelly fielded the ensuing onside kick from PLU for a 17 yard return, and Lewis and Clark kneeled the ball to run out the clock on their first victory over PLU since 1989. The Pios advance to 7-0 on the season and have guaranteed themselves a spot playing for the conference championship against Linfield. Next week the Pios take on Willamette at home in their last home game of the season, the senior game for the group of guys who were 1-8 their freshman year. Lewis and Clark rushed for 202 yards, while holding PLU to only 71 yds. 121 of those pioneer rushing yards were a result of the effort of the Pio offensive line in conjunction with their running back Joevante Mayes (Sr.) Curtis Shirey had 2 rushing TD's, Mayes with 1 rushing. Welch threw for 2, one to Shawn Evans and one to Andrew Frisina who made a shoestring catch. The Pioneer defense stepped up yet again, holding the Lutes to just 6 of 13 on 3rd down, sacking Halverson 3 times and forcing a fumble and an interception.

Player Spotlight: Keith Welch

Sophomore QB Keith Welch Jr. is ranked #5 in Total Offense and #4 in scoring among DIII football nationwide. Welch averages 336.3 yds/game and has been responsible for 144 points. On the season Welch has thrown for 1486 yards and rushed for 532, while maintaining a completion percentage of 59.89%

Keith is one of the many Northern California natives on the Pioneer football team, a graduate of Fairfield H.S. Welch is known on the team not only for his athletic skills, but also his jokes-which seem to come in an endless stream. After 7 A.M. practice he can often be heard looking for a ride to go to McDonald's and get breakfast. There is no doubt that Welch is a leader of the Pioneer football program, his talents and skills set him apart as a gifted athlete who continues to perform and post impressive stat sheets. He was named to the d3football.com Team of the Week last week for his 4 touchdown performance in the LC homecoming victory over UPS.

When asked about the team Welch said "I love these guys, they're my family." And when asked about the upcoming game at Pacific Lutheran he said "We understand it's going to be a battle, but we've been preparing for this war."

Undefeated Pioneers with another victory 31-28 over UPS

The Pioneers sure know how to keep their fans involved in their games, and once again the game ended with the opposition's hopes ticking down to zero along with the game clock. Puget Sound's last minute efforts at a comeback via laterals was stifled by the Pioneer defense; The same Pioneer defense that held UPS to 63 yards rushing on 27 attempts, and forced 2 turnovers. LC's offense had 488 total yards, 166 rushing and 322 passing. QB Keith Welch contributed most to those numbers with the 322 passing yards himself completing 23/36 passes and rushing for 142 yards. The end of the game was anything but dull, the Pioneers gained possession of the ball with 4:54 to go in the game, up 31-28 after a Monley field goal was followed up by a UPS touchdown. UPS kicked-off deep and the ball was returned to the LC 35. The Pios drove 58 yards on 10 plays down to the UPS 9 yard line, taking almost 4 minutes off the clock. The Pios elected to take the clock down a bit further on a fourth down attempt from the UPS 9, and were stopped. UPS gained possesion on their own 9, and 9 plays later were facing a hail-mary hope at a victory or tie to go to overtime. In a bit of trickery the QB Braden Foley (Fr. ) rolled right and tossed the ball laterally to his teammate across the field. The ball was kept alive for about 5 or 6 tosses before the ball was finally fumbled by Foley again at his own 7 yard line. With offensive penalty flags down, the referees picked up their laundry and jogged off the field, signaling an end to the crazy yet exciting end to the Pioneers 6th victory this season. For the Pioneer seniors-this leaves their all time record vs. Puget Sound at 3-1, and this leaves the Pioneers atop the conference alongside the only other undefeated team, Linfield.

This year, Carney and the news team are spotlighting the Pios prior to their homecoming game against conference rival University of Puget Sound.

Pios roll on to 5-0: Lewis and Clark 30 Whitworth 22

The Pioneers ended yet another game in victory formation earlier today at home in Griswold Stadium. The Pios advance to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. For LC, this is the first 5-0 start since 1962 and the first 2-0 start in conference since 1990, the same year many of the seniors on this team were being born. It was an overall team effort, led on offense by none other than Keith Welch (So.) Welch had 149 yards passing, 149 yards rushing and 31 yards receiving. Welch accounted for the team's 3 touchdowns, two rushing and one throwing to Shawn Evans (Sr.) Kicker Simon Monley also accounted for some points,he was 3 of 4 on field goals and perfect for extra points. A special acknowledgement should be given to ATH Tucker Laurence for his punting, holding, passing, receiving and blocking performances. Laurence really did it all in his contribution to the Pios win. The Pioneer defense showed up today creating 3 turnovers, and holding Whitworth to 0% 3rd down conversions in the 1st half. The Pioneer defense also sacked Whitworth QBs 9 times throughout the game, with senior Louie Baltazar leading that stat with 3 sacks alone.
The Pioneers look to take a 6th victory over University of Puget Sound next Saturday, Oct. 21. Many Pio fans and Logger fans alike will remember the UPS vs. LC games the last two years that came down to the wire. Lewis and Clark winning both of their last 2 meetings.

LC Watchin' Games this Weekend

The Pios had the saturday off as part of their bye week this weekend. The Pioneers finished out a week of practice healthy and ready to face Whitworth on Oct. 15. Around the league Linfield beat Puget Sound 73-7, Willamette defeated Pacific 49-7 and Pacific Lutheran beat Whitworth in a last second field goal to pull out a victory 20-17. Next Saturday the undefeated Lewis and Clark Pioneerss will take on the Whitworth Pirates at home in their first home game since the opening week Sept. 10. That game will be at 1pm. The undefeated Pioneers put another notch on their win belt yesterday afternoon in Forest Grove, OR against Pacific University. The Pios had 524 yards of total offense, led by star Pioneer quarterback Keith Welch. Welch accounted for 5 tds, 3 rushing and 2 throwing. He ran for 106 yards and threw for 273. The Pios 61 points scored were also aided by a Curtis Shirey punt return for a touchdown. The Pioneer defense was lead once again by performances by Chris Kelly and Logan Kotzian who had 8 and 9 tackles respectively. Pio special teams looked good, even with the hurt Long Snapper Matt Karsh standing on the sidleine. With this 61-35 victory, the Pios open there conference schedule 1-0 and head into a bye week to prepare for their first home game since Sep. 9 against conference rival Whitworth. That game will be played at Fred Wilson Field at 1pm Sat. Oct. 15.

After a trip to St. Paul, Minnesota, the Pioneers return home with a 37-28 victory and advance to 3-0 on the season. For the first time since '95, the Pios start the season off with a 3-0 record.The game in St. Paul was anything but dull. The Pioneer offense shined yet again with 593 total offensive yards, scoring 37 points. Even the first 10 minutes of the game was a sight to see. After driving down the field on their opening drive, the Pios missed a field goal.Taking over with the ball the Scots got a few first downs and looked to be threatening the end zone. On a 1st and 10 at the Lewis and Clark 19 yard-line, the Macalester Scots QB Clark Bledsoe ran to his right and was punished by LC cornerback Logan Kotzian. In the collision that Kotzian described "like a rattlesnake recoil" Kotzian's helmet flew in the air, as did the football, and Bledsoe fell to the ground. Kotzian remained standing, with no helmet, looking for the ball, as Louis Baltazar fell on it to regain possession for the Pios. The game remained exciting throughout and as Macalester seemed to threaten a comeback, in the 4th quarter, the Pioneer defense blocked a FG attempt that would have brought the game within 1 score. The Pios closed the game out after an interception by Lamar Curry late in the 4th quarter to end any hopes of a Macalester comeback.The Pioneers travel to Forest Grove, Oregon next Saturday to start October and their conference schedule on the road against Pacific (0-3). Pacific will most likely be well prepared for the game, taking their bye-week to get ready to host LC on Oct. 1 at 1:30 PM

Pioneers arrive in Minnesota

The Pios arrived in Minneapolis, Minnesota friday afternoon in preparation for their game saturday against the Macalester Scots. The game will be played at 1pm central time, thats 11am for the fans back home on the west coast. Watch the game streamed online via the Macalester Athletics website. The Pios practiced at the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers facilities in Minneapolis (pictured above) for their Friday walk-thrus.The Pios looked good preparing for tomorrow's contest.As for the tagline of "land of 10,000 lakes" I personally have counted 27 so far, so I think the claim is well founded.

Pioneers Start Season 2-0

After a stellar home opener against C-M-S, the Pios travelled down to Southern California, to face the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. The Pios held off an attempted comeback by the Sagehens, to defeat Pomona-Pitzer on their home field, The Pio's second consecutive victory against them. Pre-game comments brought both programs out firing, with Pomona scoring on their opening drive. Not to be out-done, the Pios scored on their opening drive, with Keith Welch's first of 5 TD passes. Welch had a hand in 6 of the Pios scores, running for 1 on top of his 5 throwing, proving he can be a playmaker with his arm as well as his feet. The Pio defense forced turnovers when it counted and had 2 interceptions, and a fumble recovery to end Pomona's hope at a comeback. The defense was lead by seniors Baltazar, Kelly, Curtin and Lettunich. A great performance of 7 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception are credited to junior corner Logan Kotzian. Pioneer Football heads to St.Paul, Minnesota to face the Macalester Scots next Saturday.

The Pios opened up their season with a 36-14 home win against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Staggs. Lewis and Clark put on an impressive showing scoring on only the 2nd play on offense. Averaging 7.7 yac, and with 331 yards rushing, the Pioneer offensive line was named to the d3football.com Team of the Week. Along with the O-Line, Riley Mitchell was also named to the team of the week for his 1 sack and 5 tackles and 2 forced fumbles. The Pioneers head down to Pomona-Pitzer this saturday to start their stint away from home.

Q & A w/ Ryan Lockard

Coach Ryan Lockard hasn't hung up his cleats quite yet. During the Pioneer offseason, Lockard takes a trip across the Atlantice to continue his football playing career. Lockard currently plays in Poland for the Warsaw Eagles. I got a chance to ask him some questions about his experiences. Whats it like playing football in a foreign country?

There is no other experience like playing football in a foreign country. You get to experience new cultures, learn new languages, get to see amazing historical sites, and play the game that you love. On top of that, you get paid to do it! Can’t beat that.

1.Favorite thing about Poland?

My favorite thing about Poland has been learning about the Second World War’s impact on the country. I live right in the middle of downtown Warsaw, the country’s capital, and during WWII the city was completely destroyed by the Germans. There were 1,300,000 people who lived in Warsaw before the German invasion and only 1,000 people were still living in the ruins after the war ended. It is amazing to see how the city is now after seeing pictures of the ruins.

2.How do you spend your time?

I really don’t have very many things that occupy my time during the week. I have 2 ones hour and a half practices each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays and then play our games on either Saturday or Sunday. Before I practice on Thursday, the other Americans and I go and help coach at our junior team’s practice. We serve not only as coaches for the junior team, but also on our own team. It is very common to be a player coach in Europe.

During the day, I’ll go to the gym and workout and do some site seeing with some of my teammates. I’ll also watch film of the upcoming opponent and break down their game film. Most of the guys on the team do not know how to watch film properly, so I will always go over the film with them at practice and tell them what to look for when they watch it.

3.Whats the number 1 question foreigners ask you?

“Where is Oregon?” Anytime I tell someone where I’m from, that’s usually the question I get. Everyone in Europe knows where California because of Hollywood and all of the movies, so I just explain it by saying that it is the state that borders California to the north. Then they always assume that the weather is just as nice in Oregon as it is in California.

4.Anything you've learned to say in Polish?

The guys have taught me how to say some things on the field, but I don’t really know how to say too many things that I would say to my mother. I’m learning though, slowly but surely.

5.How is the team lookin'?

We’re looking pretty solid. There are a lot of big and athletic guys on our team, they just don’t know the game very well because football has only been in Poland for about six years. There are three other Americans on the team, two of which were DIII All-Americans. We’re picked to finish third or forth in the league, but we’re about to surprise a lot of people.

6. You've played football in France, Denmark and now Poland, which is the best?

That’s a tough question. I had a great time playing in France and Denmark, but I also love it so far in Poland. I would have to say that each country has different things to offer. France has amazing food and wine, Denmark has the happiest people that I’ve ever seen and gorgeous girls (although Poland is up there too), and I like Poland’s history and am impressed by the resiliency of the Polish people for rebuilding their country after WWII.

A regular at every game and even 6:30 A.M. practices since his son started attending LC, Butch Evans serves as an encouragement and as an essential part of the Pioneer family. Shawn Evans, Butch's son, is no stranger to awards and honors, and this father-son tandem is an integral part of our program.Family is a word that gets thrown around by many different sports programs across the country from little league to major league. But it is not a word that gets treated lightly at Lewis and Clark. While having 2 father-son coaching tandems as a model for real family relationships, the Pioneers attitude of a family willing to fight for eachother is something we take pride in. Butch Evans was diagnosed with cancer 5 years ago, and Shawn, originally playing football away from home, decided to transfer back to his native Oregon to be near his father while finishing out his football career. The Pioneer family is pulling together to fight for one of our own. Butch has shown his love not only for his son but also the family at LC and we are hoping to give something back to the Evans family that has done so much for us. In an effort to alleviate medical costs the Pios are raising money by selling wristbands, like this one, for $3. Pios After Graduation

Ryan Lockard [pictured on the far left] graduated in the class of 2007, since then Ryan has not left his football career behind. Along with helping coach the Pioneers to their best seasons in years, Lockard continues his playing days, but a on a different continent. Lockard loves his status as Professional Football player, and who wouldn't. This season Ryan Lockard will be playing for the Warsaw Eagles, out of Warsaw, Poland. Pioneer Football Loses a Legend

Lewis and Clark Football legend Fred Wilson passed away yesterday at the age of 85. Prior to Coach Fred Wilson's attendance at LC, he served in the U.S. Air Force and attended the University of Oregon. Wilson transferred to LC and prior to graduating in 1951, he led the Pioneer team to an undefeated season and a 61-7 Pear Bowl victory over San Fransisco State as an All-Conference back. Wilson returned to Lewis and Clark to coach many sports, and coached football for 20 years, earning 3 NWC championships. Wilson was named a District 2 NAIA Coach of the Year and is a 5 time inductee into the Pioneer Hall of Fame. His name has graced the playing field at Griswold Stadium since 2006 and will forever remain in the hearts of the Pioneer family. He will be missed greatly by all of us.

In a game that can really only be described as special, the Lewis and Clark Pioneers defeated the Puget Sound Loggers 68-64.

In this game Lewis and Clark:
Broke a 48-year scoring record, setting a new record at 68
Had 575 yards of Total Offense
Held the Loggers to -7 yards rushing
The Teams broke a combined scoring record in the NWC with 132 comined points

With this Win:
LC has its first road conference win since 2002
LC starts with 2 conference wins for the first time since 1997
LC has a 4-2 start for the first time since 1995

As if the records and the firsts weren't enough, the game was won with 1.7 seconds left on the clock, as Keith Welch found Shawn Evans in the back of the endzone to take the lead 67-64. This play followed a 23 yard kickoff return, a 39 yard pass from Welch to Evans, and a heartbreaking incompletion that was overturned from a touchdown on a pass from Welch to Andrew Frisina. The Pioneers on Saturday extended their home winning streak, and improved to 3-2 on the season by defeating the NAIA's Menlo Oaks. The Oaks traveled up to Griswold stadium on October 9, to face the Pios in their 5th game of the season. The Pioneer Defense put on another outstanding performance, holding Menlo to just 10 points and forcing 3 turnovers. The Pio offense rushed for 192 yards and passed for 165. The Pios head into a bye week and prepare for their game Oct 23 at The University of Puget Sound.

The Pioneer Defense had 6 sacks, held the Boxers to -9 yards rushing and scored a touchdown in their shutout of Pacific University October 2 at Fred Wilson Field. The Pios seemed to be firing on all cylinders. In addition to an outstanding defensive performance, the Offense put on a show for the fans, running the football for 356 yards and passing for an additional 151 yds. The Pio O-line has been performing well, currently averaging 300.5 rushing yards-per-game, bringing new meaning to the phrase "Lineman Win Games." Keith Welch finished with 2 passing(both times connecting with Shawn Evans) and 1 rushing TD. Joevante Mayes rushed for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tucker Laurence connected with freshman Peter Lovincey for another touchdown. The Pios advance to 2-2, and take their place at #4 in the conference standings. They'll take on the Menlo Oaks at home on Oct. 9.

1 Week 'til Homecoming

After a tough 38-20 loss on the road at Whitworth on September 25, the Pios look forward to their homecoming contest with the Pacific Boxers. The Pios end September with a 1-2 record and head into October looking forward to their homecoming game. The Boxers head into the game 0-2, in their first season back playing football. The Boxers are lead by their passing attack. 6 Players for the Boxers have thrown for a completion, and the Boxers roster shows that they carry 8 quarterbacks.
The game will be October 2nd, at 1:45 PM on Fred Wilson Field. Hope to see you there!

Pio's Improve to 1-1

After a stellar performance by Keith Welch and the rest of the Pioneer Offense,the Pio's score a victory over the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 63-38. With this victory the Pio's Improve to 1-1 on the season. This win is especially sweet after their meeting with Pomona last year. That game came down to a last minute drive and the Pios were unable to hold on to their lead in the 2009 game. But this was all turned around by a 63-38 route on September 18,2010.

This honor is awarded to students who are enrolled full-time and achieve a GPA of 3.700 or higher, with at least 12 graded semester credits. Our congratulations go out to them and the other 40 Lewis and Clark Student-Athletes who were awarded this honor

Phở (Vietnamese pronunciation: [fə̃ː] ( listen); often written pho in the US where it is typically pronounced /ˈfʌ/^[1]) is a Vietnamese beef and noodle soup.^[2] The soup includes noodles made from rice and is often served with basil, lime, bean sprouts and peppers that are added to the soup by the customer.

The tradition continued when the big fella's made a trip over to Pho Van in the Hawthorne district for some $5 Pho a few weeks ago. Coach Falconer has a pretty severe addiction to the stuff after a trip to Vietnam this past summer.

Today is a pre game trip to La Serenita in Sellwood for Taco's, Burritto's, Sopa's and the best Horchat a in town!

Last Friday the O Line went downtown to City Market and saw the good people at Viande Meats. Every Friday they do a little something called Porchetta which is just about the best thing you can eat - ever.

It entails roasting a whole stuffed pig so guys over 250 lbs pretty much have to love it...and at $5.99 for a 1/2 lbs of the best pig in town it's perfect for a group know for it's competitive nature both on the playing field and in the cafeteria.

Spring semester of my Junior year I,(Zach Himmelberger) through Lewis & Clark's study abroad program, spent six months in South America. Cuenca, Ecuador became my home away from home during my three months of study. I was put up with a host family, who were absolutely amazing. My host mom was the best cook ever, my host dad was the retired head of the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee turned congressman, my host brother was ex-National Champion in cycling, and my host sister was an extremely successful businesswomen with an awesome 8 year old daughter who became one of my best friends. Besides having a great host family, my school experience was top notch. I, along with 14 other L&C students, attend La Fundacion Amauta. We took two Spanish classes along with a biology class and a anthropology class. I would have to say the Spanish classes I took in Ecuador were the best classes I have ever taken. Our professors were funny, engaging, challenging, and probably the best ever at what they do. Although I was able to speak Spanish before leaving my skills and confidence in speaking Spanish have sky-rocketed.

After the semester in Cuenca ended in mid-April, two friends, Sam and Ivan, and I headed for the rain forest. The three of us decided to do some volunteer work in the amazon with a Quechua-speaking community called Shiripuno. It was located just outside of Pto. Misahualli in the Napo province in northeastern Ecuador. I spent one month in Shiripuno as a volunteer...it was hands down the most amazing experience of my life. I lived alongside indigenous people who call the Ecuadorian amazon their home. We helped these people with their day to day routines of cutting and gathering cacao which is eventually made into chocolate, uprooting and planting yucca, feeding and caring for their livestock, making crafts for tourists, etc. During our stay, the people really accepted us into their community not only as driven volunteers willing to do just about anything to help but also as good friends. They looked out for us and cared for us while also making fun of us and hassling us from time to time. Overall, my experience their was great, something I will never forget. The last night we were in Shiripuno we were asked to say a short something to the people of the community. I told them, "Aunque era poco tiempo que estuve aca, la experience durara por siempre en mi corazon." (Although I was here a short time, the experience will always last in my heart). We left the next day to a scene of several crying women and children who had come to love us in such a short amount of time.

That was just one experience of many that my time abroad gave me the opportunity to have. The entire journey of being out of my element and really being forced to open up to a new and different culture is invaluable. Learning so much about the myself, so much about the world, is what made this something that, for me, has changed my life. It has opened me up to the world of travel, to new cultures, to wanting to jump on every new opportunity presented in front of me, which in my opinion, is a great way to live.

Anyways, my time abroad was life altering. I loved every minute of it and if I could do it again, I definitely would!!! I do suggest it to anyone looking to experience something great.

What is it REALLY like to live in P-town?

Living in Portland means you get a lot of visitors. You hear the same question over and over again - Why does everyone love living in Portland? Having 2 transplants on the staff - Coach Jacobs and Coach Phil : They can attest to the Portland appeal and come up with quite a few different answers….besides it being so beautful! But the Answers are not typical....

Portland’s appeal happens to be a mix of cuisine, entertainment, arts, culture, sports, and natural beauty… with the ”Portland” twist into the realm of Atypical. The Atypical makes you love this city. We have all the ‘normal’ big city items to enjoy: Professional sports, tall buildings downtown, countless malls, chain restaurants, big name concerts, and major company headquarters. We have ‘the expected’ that every city should offer. But, it’s the other stuff that makes you sometimes shake your head in both amazement or perplexity…or both.

Atypical #1: ”Why are the outdoors such a big deal here?” The list of sights is too abundant but the big ticket items are: Mount Hood, Multnomah Falls, Silver Falls, Columbia River Gorge, and the Oregon Coast (where scenes from both Goonies and Twilight were filmed). You can snowboard, surf, hike, fish and bike… all in one weekend.

Atypical #2: “Who thought of these restaurants?” For example, Voodoo Doughnuts serves doughnuts 24 hours a day and provides anything from Captain Crunch Doughnuts to an Arnold Palmer and Fire on the Mountain runs a special for free wings if you can bounce on a pogo stick for a minute. Interested? Then also try Fat City Cafe, Por Que No?, Pine State Biscuits, and don’t leave out Portland City Grill, while both trendy and hip, offers a panoramic view of the city from the 30th floor.

Atypical #3: "How do so many different people get along?" Good question. Most likely because Portland comes with a friendliness that promotes a good vibe…. maybe it’s all that fresh air. But, no doubt, we have a variety: green, trendy, classy, sporty, old-fashioned, liberal and combination's of each. We like different music, different sports, and different art. But, we can all come together and celebrate the ‘atypical’ that makes Portland unforgettable.

After all, when was the last time you were driving and ended up staring at a mountain like that on the way to the Burgerville?

The Pioneers will be expecting 2 cousins next fall. Both play LB, both went to Archbishop Riordan High School and both were an integral part of turning around the Crusaders Football program in the 2006/2007 seasons.

The only difference is their choice in Junior Colleges. Dan Curtin chose San Francisco City College while Louis Baltazar chose Laney Junior College.

It was an easy decision for these two once they made the visit.

"Legit" was how Dan described the campus and Louis saw an "academically challenging environment inside of a bad ass city"...

Curtis Smith's hard work in the lab and the classroom was recognized by being named to the 2008 Academic All-District Football Team presented by ESPN The Magazine.

This - after being named 2nd Team All League in only his second year on the field with L&C. (a previous knee injury kept him off the field in 2006)

No mercy was had last Friday morning when one Joevonte Mayes and Drew Hubbard made an example of both full time defensive coaches.

The tournament started during daily doubles and was brought to a close this past bye week. The Team was surprised at both Magbanua's and Jacob's lack of answer to Maye's dink and dunk attack.

"I guess Bowling Green is just that good", was the only comment Coach Jacob's could muster...

Shawn Kelly strikes again...
The coaches were reminiscing about their younger days in the offices the other day and watching an interview on Youtube about the Ultimate Warrior. Sophomore defensive back Shawn Kelly, a big Ultimate Warrior fan, caught part of the coaches' throwback session and decided to give the team another laugh at practice the next day.

In the special teams meeting yesterday, Coach Phil expressed that the special teams needed to have a "blue collar" mentality. Additionally, he explained that we needed to come to practice with our hard hats and lunch pail, ready for work.

The Lewis & Clark Pioneers win their opening game with a score of 43-7 against Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. The win actually put the Pioneers on the front page of the Oregonian.

The team landed in St. Louis, Missouri on Friday and drove straight to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. The pictures of the trip and the game are posted below.

XBox NCAA Football Tourney

We are about a week and a half into camp now, and the Lewis & Clark Coaching staff decided to put together a NCAA Football Tournament on the XBox.

We made teams of 2, and each player had to play two quarters of each game. Then each team picked from one of the pre-selected college teams out of a hat. Because of the uneven amount of teams, a coaches' team was created. The coaches' team has made it past the 2nd round so far.

Camp so far has been productive and very fast-paced. The players are playing with a lot of intensity. They are practicing like they are preparing to win a few games. The first test will be against Principia College in Illinois on September 6th.

Last night all the players reported to camp, and today was the first practice. The practice was about as good as you could ask for on the first day. The intensity and speed of practice was high, and the players were all very excited for the start of the new season.

We are all very optimistic about this season, and it showed with the tempo of practice. The upperclassmen did a good job of showing the incoming players the ropes. The team also seemed to understand the concept of taking responsibility and accountability among themselves. It is always nice to see the players encouraging each other as opposed to having the coaches create the intensity.

Two new coaches were officially hired today!

Coach Tim Jacobs was hired as the new Defensive Coordinator after spending the last few years in the same position at North Medford High School in Southern Oregon.
Coach Phil Magbanua joins the staff as the Defensive Backs Coach and Special Teams Coordinator after a seven year stint at UNLV in Las Vegas.
